If you are getting ready for your first BOTOX Cosmetic treatment, you will probably have a lot of questions. Rest assured that BOTOX is a safe, FDA-approved treatment to fade frown lines and other wrinkles that form when you make expressions. Understanding all that BOTOX can do, what a BOTOX injection is like, and what to expect after treatment can help ease your nerves as you anticipate your first injections. We’ll answer many of those questions in this blog post.
What Does BOTOX Do?
BOTOX blocks the signals from your nerves to your muscles telling them to contract. By temporarily halting those muscle movements, the treatment softens wrinkles and fine lines and stops the creation of new lines. You can choose to get BOTOX on any part of your face and neck that have expression lines (also called dynamic wrinkles).
What Types of Facial Lines Can Be Improved With BOTOX?
BOTOX can improve several types of facial lines, including the following.
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Smile lines on the cheeks
- Lip lines
- Brow lines
As a first-timer, you may want to follow up with your injector 2 to 3 weeks after your initial injection. At that point, they can administer a small touch-up injection if needed to refine your dosage and ensure you achieve the results you want.
What Does a BOTOX Procedure Involve?
It’s best to come to your appointment with a makeup-free face. Your provider will clean the injection area with rubbing alcohol or another cleanser and mark treatment points. Typically, BOTOX is administered without anesthetic, as you should only feel minimal discomfort.
There is minimal to no downtime after BOTOX, and you should be able to resume your daily routine immediately after treatment. Do not lie down, bend over, or rub your injection site for at least the first 4 hours after your treatment. Your provider will also advise you to avoid strenuous physical activities for a few days.
Will I Experience Any Side Effects With BOTOX?
You may experience some redness, bruising, and swelling at the injection site. Typically, these symptoms subside in a few days. Although rare, you might also experience fatigue and flu-like symptoms.
If you have signs of an allergic reaction to BOTOX, such as rash, hives, or swelling of the mouth or tongue, get emergency medical help. Allergic and other serious adverse events following BOTOX injections are not common.
How Soon Can I See Results With BOTOX?
Unfortunately, you won’t see results immediately after the procedure. Most men and women start seeing results in a few days and will notice their skin looking smoother and more youthful. You will see full results from your BOTOX treatment after a few weeks.
Can I Use BOTOX for Non-Cosmetic Reasons?
BOTOX can help improve several medical concerns, such as severe underarm sweating, uncontrollable blinking, chronic migraines, and overactive bladder. You should talk to your provider if BOTOX can help with your specific medical concern and if you are a good candidate for this treatment. It may also help keep you from grinding your teeth while you sleep, as we discuss in our related blog post.
Your provider can answer all your questions ahead of your BOTOX treatment and get you comfortable with the procedure.
