What Is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide was FDA cleared in 2017 for Type II Diabetes under the brand name “Ozempic” and it was found that the medication helped patients lose weight as an added benefit. Then in 2021, Semaglutide was rebranded as “Wegovy,” and FDA-cleared for weight loss. Semaglutide is in the class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. Another GLP-1 receptor agonist that has gained popularity for weight loss is Tirzepatide which is under the brand names “Mounjaro” and “Zepbound.”
How Do Weight Loss Shots Work?
These medications improve insulin sensitivity, help you stay full for longer, and act on centers in the brain to suppress appetite. Our patients being treated with the medication consistently describe that it helps shut out the “food noise” and helps curb cravings and helps them to stop fixating on food.
Our goal is to use the medication as a tool to develop healthy eating habits such as smaller portions and kicking sugar cravings to prevent weight regain after transitioning off the medication.
With the help of Semaglutide, our patients have been able to reach their weight loss goals and lower the risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
What Are the Benefits of Semaglutide?
In the 2023 SELECT study, there was a 20% reduction in major adverse cardiac events with once weekly Semaglutide injections in patients that were overweight or obese compared to the placebo group. For this reason, more and more doctors such as cardiologists are now jumping on board in treating patients with a GLP-1 receptor agonists due to the long-term health benefits in decreasing risks for weight related diseases.
What Is A Semaglutide Treatment Like?
At our practice, we have seen firsthand how effective Semaglutide is in helping our patients reach their weight loss goals and gain back their confidence.
Our weight loss program starts with a consultation to determine if the patient is a candidate to safely be prescribed the medication and then we schedule weekly visits for medication management and diet counseling.
Whether the goal is for weight loss to prep patients’ upcoming body contouring surgery or just to help patients reach their aesthetic and health goals, Semaglutide has been a game changer!
