Regenerative medicine is in its infancy and there is exciting evidence that we may be able to harness the body’s own healing mechanisms to help accelerate healing, reduce inflammation and to promote growth of healthy tissue.
Men and women from New Haven, New London, Mystic, Westerly, Hopkinton, and the surrounding areas who visit Dr. Beth Collins’ plastic surgery practice for pre-juvenation treatments to fight the signs of aging may consider PRP for skin and hair restoration, laser skin treatments, (plated) SkinScience medical-grade skincare products, BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal filler injections and plastic surgery procedures to slow the hands of time.
Dr. Beth Collins specializes in treatments that help improve your skin’s appearance, restoring it to health and radiance while slowing the signs of aging. Contact her Guilford office at (203) 689-5295 or her Mystic location at (860) 572-6868 or request your consultation online to learn how pre-juvenation treatments can help you age gracefully so you look your best at any age.
PRP for Healthy Skin
Platelets are a major contributor to the inflammatory process that governs the healing of tissues. They contain growth factors and inflammatory mediators that are released naturally in our bodies when we are injured.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to use each individual patient’s own healing system to improve the treatment area.
How Is a PRP Treatment Performed?
PRP injections are prepared by taking anywhere from one to a few tubes of your own blood and running it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. These activated platelets are then injected directly into the area to be treated. This releases growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells your body produces.
What Does PRP Treat?
There is good evidence that it helps in the following cosmetic applications:
- Regrowth of hair in early hair loss.
- Improvement in texture of skin when directly injected or used with microneedling
- Improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles when used as an injectable “filler”.
- Speeds recovery after resurfacing laser procedures.
PRP for Hair Loss
Men and women lose hair as they get older for various reasons. The process is gradual and consists of a slow miniaturization of the hair follicle which eventually results in complete involution.
We have found that if you catch the process in the phase of miniaturization, when the vellus hairs (or baby hairs) are still present, a series of injections of PRP can reverse the process.
PRP for hair loss is best performed in a series of 3 treatments spaced one month apart. Hair growth is a slow process, and it takes time to see the full benefit of the treatment.
If there was a good response to the treatment, a maintenance phase of one treatment every six months is recommended to prevent a relapse.
If there was a less-than-satisfactory response to treatment, the degree of hair loss may be too extensive for PRP alone and we can discuss follicular unit transplant (NeoGraft®).
To help supplement the PRP hair restoration treatment, Dr. Collins often recommends using one or all of these treatments at home between PRP sessions:
- Vivescal vitamins for hair growth
- Cap therapy
- Propecia
- Minoxidil
How Much Does PRP for Hair Restoration Cost?
Vials may be used all at once to cover a larger area of treatment, or they may be used on different days to be used as a series. Most people need one vial per treatment session.
- 1 vial: $550
- 2 vials: $1,075
- 3 vials: $1,575
- 4 vials: $2,075

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers for Lines and Wrinkles
Nonsurgical injectable treatments like BOTOX Cosmetic and dermal fillers, including JUVÉDERM and Restylane, are a great way to treat early signs of aging and keep wrinkles from forming.
BOTOX is widely used to treat dynamic wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows, around they eyes, and on the neck. By temporarily blocking the nerve signals to the muscles under the skin, BOTOX works to stop wrinkles from forming.
Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM and Restylane are used to restore or enhance volume in the cheeks, temples, around the mouth and along the jawline to enhance and shape the face. As we age, your skin loses volume and hydration, resulting in sagging, lax skin. Dermal fillers work to restore the lost volume while adding hydration to the cells to lift and plump the skin.
