During adolescence and even into adulthood, excess tissue and fat deposits can develop in the chests of some men, creating the appearance of feminine-looking breasts. While this issue, which is known as gynecomastia in medicine, typically resolves on its own as men mature, for some it can be a lifelong concern that leads to embarrassment and low self-esteem. Some men may turn to Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Beth Collins who performs male breast reduction in Connecticut.

Who Should Get a Male Breast Reduction?
Men who have enlarged male breasts should first be evaluated to find out the cause of the issue. If there are no underlying concerns about hormone levels, drug use or other issues that can cause gynecomastia, male breast reduction surgery may be the best solution. Although male breast reduction is most typically performed on adult men, it can sometimes be appropriate for teens suffering from severe chest deformity.
What Does Male Breast Reduction Do?
The male breast reduction procedure is designed to reduce enlarged male breasts by alleviating puffiness and protrusion in the chest and nipples. Typically, this involves surgical removal of excess glandular tissue from behind the nipples and additional upper body contouring with liposuction.
Male breast reduction incisions are usually very discreet and are made around each areola or in each armpit. Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia may be used, and the procedure generally takes about one to three hours.
After Male Breast Reduction: What Should I Expect?
After male breast reduction, expect to feel mild soreness and tenderness in your upper body during the initial recovery period (one to two weeks). Most patients are back to work within a few days to a week, and light exercise may be resumed after two weeks. Strenuous chest exercises will be prohibited for at least four weeks, and a compression strap should be worn on the chest for several weeks as well.
Related Procedures and Male Breast Reduction Alternatives
Many patients may seek liposuction in combination with male breast reduction to further enhance their physique, while others may undergo chest liposuction as an alternative to male breast reduction if that is all that is needed to reduce puffiness in the chest area. Dr. Collins will evaluate your unique anatomy and consider your cosmetic goals before recommending male breast reduction surgery, liposuction or both.
